Practical CSV and JSON Conversion Guide
CSV works well for spreadsheets and bulk imports, while JSON fits APIs and structured payloads. FormaX helps switch between the two for data cleanup, operations exports, API mocks, and migration scripts.
Before converting, check headers, delimiters, and quote rules. Many failures come from mixed commas, tabs, multiline cells, or incomplete quotes in the source file.
Pre-Conversion Checklist
- Confirm whether the first row is a header row and prefer stable English keys.
- Check whether text cells contain commas, newlines, or quotes that must be escaped.
- After CSV to JSON, inspect the first few and last few rows for shifted columns.
- For JSON to CSV, prefer arrays of flat objects to avoid losing nested semantics.
Good Input Shape
name,plan,active
Alice,Pro,true
Bob,Free,falseLimits and Recommendations
- CSV has no strong type metadata, so numbers, booleans, and dates may remain strings.
- If cells contain Excel formula prefixes, apply extra safety checks before sharing the export.
- For million-row files, use a local batch script and keep the original file for rollback.
FAQ
Why are numbers converted as strings?
CSV does not carry strong typing. Keeping text values avoids corrupting ZIP codes, phone numbers, and IDs; convert field types later in your own script.
What if a cell contains a comma?
Wrap comma-containing cells in double quotes, for example "New York, USA", otherwise the parser treats it as two columns.
